What’s in Your Cannabis Pre-roll?

A blog about cannabis pre-rolls

Cannabis pre-rolls are one of the fastest growing product categories for cannabis consumers, and for good reason. They are quick and convenient, and a great way to taste what your local dispensary has on offer without making a larger purchase.

However not all cannabis pre-rolls are made the same way, or even use the same materials. So let’s explore the different types of cannabis pre-rolls you may find at your local dispensary, and how to shop for a quality pre-roll experience.

Different Types of Cannabis Pre-rolls

Cannabis pre-rolls come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Some pre-rolls may be cone shaped, while others, like The Clear’s TWAX infused pre-rolls, are rolled in a cigarette style.

You may also see varying sizes, such as a half gram pre-roll, a full gram, or more.

Additionally there are traditional pre-roll options; just flower rolled in paper, but also infused options that may include different types of cannabis oil and kief to to pump up the potency.

But what can make or break a pre-roll, is the flower.

Shake & Trim Cannabis Pre-rolls

Two of the most common fillings for a cannabis pre-roll are what’s called shake and trim.

Shake is typically the pieces of cannabis flower that may break off while sitting in a bag or jar that collect at the bottom over time. Once the bag or jar is basically empty, the shake can be collected for use.

Since shake typically consists of very small buds, it isn’t the most appealing to the consumer. This makes it a good option for pre-rolls, because the consumer doesn’t see the flower beforehand.

While it isn’t the ideal cannabis pre-roll filling, shake is certainly the better option compared to trim.

After cannabis plants are harvested, they can be trimmed right away (wet trim), or hung to dry and then trimmed afterward (dry trim) to make them presentable for sale. Trim is just that, the trimmings of the cannabis plant taken during the harvest stage.

So while shake is still flower buds, just smaller chunks, trim is typically just the leaves and stems of the cannabis plant that are left over from processing.

A large portion of cannabis pre-rolls sold in dispensaries are unfortunately made from trim, because it is another avenue for a manufacturer to make money off the byproduct of cannabis production. It happens to also be the most affordable option.

While shake and trim lend themselves to more affordable cannabis pre-roll options, you can easily notice the lack of quality. Especially when compared with a cannabis pre-roll that used full flower.

Full Flower Cannabis Pre-rolls

Cannabis pre-rolls made with full flower are the best possible way to enjoy a pre-roll.  Full flower pre-rolls use whole cannabis flower that is ground up and then rolled/filled.

While full flower pre-rolls tend to be more expensive, this is typically justified due to the higher quality flower in the pre-roll. Experienced consumers can taste the difference between shake/trim pre-rolls and full flower pre-rolls, and may be willing to pay more for a higher quality experience.

For other consumers it may just come down to price. Full flower pre-rolls may be too price-restrictive for some, and if they don’t mind the flavor of shake/trim pre-rolls and they provide a satisfactory effect, there is nothing wrong with that.

However at The Clear we believe in providing the best premium cannabis experience you can buy. Our TWAX infused pre-rolls only use full flower, that we grind our ourselves and blend in precise ratios with our one of a kind cannabis oil flavors.

If you’re looking for the best infused pre-roll experience available, look for TWAX pre-rolls, available in CO, NV, MT, MO, NJ and MA!
